MODULE I:

Techniques of wood graining and imitation marble in the European tradition

In this class you will explore various types of glazes to execute a number of faux woods and faux marbles.  Besides hands-on practice with a renown master, class size allows for ample one-on-one training. 
 



Dates :  
September 17th, 2018 to October 19th, 2018 (5 weeks / 175 hours of training).


Venue :  Our next autumn/winter session will be held in our new atelier located in the town of AGEN in the Lot et Garonne. 
This is to facilitate transportation and also to give access to a wider choice of accommodation.  Agen can be reached by bullet train from Paris, either directly from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport or from Montparnasse train station (quicker).  For more information on accommodation in Agen and how to get to the new venue please don't hesitate to write to us.

Who can apply : 
This course is open to beginners or professionals looking for a complete and in-depth training in wood graining and faux marbles.

Michel Nadaï, recipient of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award (Best Craftsman of France award).
Patrick Curmi (for the 1st week on preparing the surface).

Certification of the course : 
Students receive the school's Certificate upon completion of the course.  Certificate will mention that he or she studied with a recipient of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award (Best Craftsman of France award).

Outline of the program :*

A decorative painter's training starts with the essential steps, mainly with the study of graining and marbling: generalities, use of graining and marbling, glazes, palettes, learning how to use specific tools, learning the specific brushstrokes, studying the structure of the wood and/or marble, the color,  the effects, crystallization and overglaze.

In this course, each subject is studied thoroughly and in-depth.  Daily practical and theoretical demonstrations are followed by immediate hands-on exercises.

- Preparing the substrates
- How to care for your tools and other materials.
- How to properly use the various tools (brushes, steel combs, comté crayons...)
- Study of the various ways wood is cut.
- Study of the various ways marble is cut.
- How to prepare and use various kinds of glazes (oil-based, water-based...).

Training method and certification of the course:
- Theoretical explanations and demonstrations on a daily basis.
- Immediate hands on practice through daily exercises.
- Students create individual samples of graining and marbling.
- Instructor folows through each student's progress on a daily basis.
- Students receive the school's Certificate upon completion of the course.

Week 1 - Preparing the substrates
September 17th to September 21, 2018 - 5 days
Preparation and protections of the substrates.


Week 2 - Wood Graining Level I
September 24th to September 28th, 2018 - 5 days
Pine (heart grain and straight grain), Maple (heart grain and straight grain), Oak (Straight Grain):

Generalities, glazes, palettes, learning how to use specific tools, learning the specific brushstrokes, studying the structure of the wood, the color, the effects, the overglaze.

Week 3 - Faux marble (marbling) Level I
October 1st to October 5th, 2018 - (5 days)
White veined marble, Portor marble, Rouge Languedoc marble:

Generalities, glazes, palettes, learning how to use specific tools, learning the specific brushstrokes, studying the structure of the marbles, the color, the effects, crystallization.

Week 4 - Wood Graining Level II
October 8th to October 12th, 2018 - (5 days)
Oak (heart grain and silver grain), Walnut (heart grain, straight grain, burl), Mahogany (flame), root of Thuya:

Generalities, glazes, palettes, learning how to use specific tools, learning the specific brushstrokes, studying the structure of the wood, the color, the effects, the overglaze.

Week 5 - Faux marble (marbling) Level II
October 15th to October 19th, 2018 - (5 days)
Sea Green marble, Yellow Sienna marble, Sarrancolin marble:

Generalities, glazes, palettes, learning how to use specific tools, learning the specific brushstrokes, studying the structure of the marbles, the color, the effects, crystallization.
